A Song To Lift A Broken Spirit

by | Mar 10, 2013 | Uncategorized

Who doesn’t love Coldplay?  Even those who aren’t huge fans of the band must still be drawn in by lead singer Chris Martin’s humor and humble attitude.  His personality and outlook are especially refreshing when contrasted with so many other contemporary rock stars.

By far my favorite Coldplay song is Fix You.  The uncomplicated, slow tempo of the melody may not stand out, but the lyrics make the song compelling.  Like the other songs I’ve referenced on this blog, these lyrics distill extremely emotional moments of life down to succinctly beautiful language with which everyone can identify.

You’ve probably been through a time when you’ve been down and out, or conversely, the person lending support to another.  If so, these lyrics will touch you.  It’s a real go-to song for me whenever I’m feeling blue.

Fix You

When you try your best but you don’t succeed
When you get what you get, but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

All the tears come down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone and it goes to waste
Could it be worse

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth

[refrain]

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down you face

[refrain]

I love how the organ music in this song enhances the lyrics by evoking a spiritual quality.  Take a listen:

What’s your favorite song to restore your spirit when life gets hard?
